When I retired as a nurse educator, I found that I missed teaching about nursing. Therefore I decided to teach a different way. The purpose of this website is to teach the general public about common health care issues, health prevention, and health promotion activities so that you can be as healthy as you can be.

Why is it important to be as healthy as you can be?
Because you want to live a long life that is free of short-term and long-term illness or delay the onset of chronic diseases. We are all predisposed to some type of health illness due to family genes. We cannot change our family genes but we can make changes in our lifestyle to mitigate the effect of these family genes. We can make those changes by becoming proactive about our health. When you are healthy, you feel vigorous, full of energy, open to new ideas and willing to try different things to take care of yourself. When you are unhealthy you may have feelings of depression, become lethargic, self-isolate, and resistant to new ideas and ways to help yourself. It is always better to be proactive rather than reactive. That is what I want us to do, become proactive about our health.

How can we become proactive rather than reactive?
We can become proactive by learning what we need to do to be healthy and sustain our health. We can start by looking at the Healthy people 2030 guidelines. Healthy People 2030 is a national, science-based initiative developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that focuses on improving the health of the American public over a ten-year period. There are 5 general intuitive groups comprising Healthy People 2030: health conditions, health behaviors, populations, settings & systems, and social determinants of health.

Each week I will explore one of these intuitive groups and pick a topic for my vlog. Another thing I can do is develop vlogs on health issues that are of concern to you. You can make suggestions about health topics that are important to you and I will address them.

About Me
For some people, nursing is a calling. I believe that I am one of those people. I have been a nurse for more than 30 years and I still like being a nurse. If I could do it again, would I choose nursing? I think so. For me nursing is a combination of knowledge and caring. I have always been a caring person even as a child; therefore, it would be natural for me to choose this profession. I have a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in nursing. My early years were spent as a hospital-based nursing working general medical surgical nursing and physical rehabilitation nursing. Later I began working in psychiatric and chemical dependency nursing.

After getting a Master’s degree in nursing, I decided to become a nurse educator at the collegiate level. I gained a vast amount of knowledge working as a nurse educator teaching medical surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, pediatric nursing, pharmacology, and advanced medical surgical knowledge. Being a nurse educator meant that I had the opportunity to help people make a better life and gain financial security for themselves and their family.

Now that I am retired, I want to practice nursing; however, I want to do it differently. I want to be a nurse not confined to space or time. I am in a different season of my life so I decided to reinvent myself as a nurse. That is why I decided to create myself, Nurse Bee, as a nurse educator teaching virtually about health issues and concerns in episodes of Buzzing with the Bee. This way I can fulfill my need to be a nurse and get to meet new people.

Meeting new people in retirement can be challenging. I now have a chance to meet new people and help people to be as healthy as they can be. I can do that if you help me my by tuning into episodes of Buzzing with the Bee. You can contact me with questions, or comments at the bottom of my vlog page or my website: nurse-bee.com. I will respond to you as soon as possible. XOXO
